Why Wellness is Important: A Holistic Approach to Health
Wellness is more than just a trend or buzzword—it’s a vital aspect of leading a fulfilling, healthy life. But what exactly does wellness mean, and how can it contribute to our overall health?

At its core, wellness refers to a holistic approach to health, encompassing not just physical well-being but mental, emotional, spiritual, and social health, too. It’s an ongoing process that involves maintaining balance in all areas of life to achieve a state of well-being. Wellness is personal—what it means for one person may differ from what it means for another, but it always focuses on living life fully and nurturing all aspects of yourself.

Wellness isn’t just about feeling good in the moment—it’s about making conscious decisions that benefit your long-term health. Research has shown that mental wellness plays a significant role in physical health, especially in reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other chronic conditions. For instance, negative psychological health, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, can increase inflammation, blood pressure, and heart rate—all of which have detrimental effects on the body. I can speak from experience here. A few years ago, my relationship was falling apart. I was depressed and isolating, full of stress (I looked 10+ years older), and full of anxiety (I was afraid to live on my property).
On the other hand, positive mental health is linked to healthier habits like eating well, exercising regularly, and maintaining strong social connections. Practicing mindfulness, engaging in physical activities, and focusing on self-care are proven strategies for lowering stress and improving both mental and physical health. These practices support the body’s healing processes, enhance energy levels, and foster a sense of well-being. Thankfully, my partner and I resumed our relationship with the help of counseling, therapy, and twelve-step programs. Now, I am a much happier and healthier person in mind, body, and spirit. I actually like myself.
Wellness for Life: A Balanced Approach
Wellness is a lifelong journey, and achieving overall wellness requires attention to multiple dimensions of health. There are many models of wellness that highlight different aspects, but commonly recognized dimensions include:
- Physical Wellness: Care for your body through regular exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate rest. Did you know, as people age, they actually need more exercise, not less?
- Emotional Wellness: Manage your emotions constructively and nurture your mental health. For some of us, this is not an easy thing. Counseling can be big help here. Another thing to try is journaling. Journal to get those feelings out of your body, not hold them in. If that doesn't suit you and if you qualify join a twelve-step program.
- Social Wellness: Build positive relationships and create a support system of friends and family. You might want to try volunteering.
- Intellectual Wellness: Stay curious and engage in lifelong learning to expand your mind. Read books, attend events you know nothing about, listen to podcasts.
- Spiritual Wellness: Find meaning and purpose in life, whether through organized religion or personal beliefs. Or simply spend time outdoors wondering about nature.
- Vocational Wellness: Find satisfaction and enrichment in your work or life’s purpose.
- Environmental Wellness: As Vincent Van Gogh said, "If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere." Finding beauty can help foster feelings of comfort.
When you focus on all these dimensions and find balance, you create a foundation for long-term health and well-being. This comprehensive approach ensures that your physical and mental health thrive together, creating a life full of vitality and resilience. You'll be happier and who knows, it could make those around you happier, too.

While it may be challenging to change habits, the good news is that with self-awareness and strategy, you can replace negative habits with positive ones that support your wellness goals.

For myself, I've decided to reduce my time scrolling and instead pick up a pen, journal, and read some Inner Child self help books. Combined with well-established routines, you can make wellness an ongoing practice. Whether it’s taking time each day to meditate, journal, get regular exercise, spend time in nature, or simply ensuring you stay connected with loved ones, these habits can help keep you on track and motivated.
